Saying Goodbye
Penelope walked into the bedroom
to say goodbye to her grandmother
whose body, perfectly dressed, lay
on the quilt, head against pillows.
Penelope’s eyes were transfixed
by the triple mirror near the window
where a Victorian lady sat
brushing her hair
who, still reflected, crossed the carpet
to stand beside a wardrobe
buttoning high boots, preparing
for a journey. An intimate farewell.
