Avancez!
The Self-Service girl was not amused
by boys in Paris holding up her queue -
lunch was a busy time, we took too long.
Earlier we’d named the beauty by the pool
Annette because it began with A,
had fun dismissing all the Bs and Cs …
An hour meant nights in sharp-edged sheets,
my naked shoulders glistening like steak,
and not one of us spoke to a girl all week.
I tell all this, bringing you to the same hotel
and the same pool where you will turn
a golden brown and I’ll be red again
though only enough to prove to you
how fast I burn. When the femme-de-chambre
clumsied-in and rolled-eyed out,
it was my groping for cover left me stranded.
You stretched one languid, backstroke
arm behind your head and smiled.
