Fifty Years On
you walk up St Martin’s Lane and she’s not there.
You knew she wouldn’t be.
The same shops, sandwiches, strip clubs, second-hand
books, musical instruments, pornography.
And there she is, same girl in that black skirt
and polo-neck. You shout I like your hat!
and she turns and grins at you, hugging the new script
to her padded bra, checks, perhaps, to see
if her name’s up there in lights yet, and patters
along the ginnel to where it says STAGE DOOR.
You might call out Good luck.
