Bookshop with Hens
Outside, a paperback
Flicks open in the breeze.
The arcs of pages
Curving like a pair of wings.
A bell rings
As I enter,
Finding rows of perching tomes
Arranged in breeds.
I free range
From Philosophy to Art,
Erotica and Literature
The classic and the trite.
And so become absorbed
Embarking on a flight of fanciful imaginings,
"Is this a place where plots are hatched?
A nursery for embryonic words?
An incubator for my half formed thoughts?"
My reverie is broken by the sound of birds.
A sign beside the till reads.
"Eggs for sale"
With photographs of chickens, red and black,
Which subsidise the sale of books,
And are apparently kept round the back.
