Spring
Poems are sprouting everywhere.
Jo’s maths homework has become a poem and Sam’s free kick.
George giving the car more choke is a flood of poetry
and Aidan’s school assembly on Candlemas.
The diminuendo gossip in the queue for shampoo and sets at
Donna’s Place
about the articulated lorry carrying sprinklers for the new Arsenal
stadium,
as it wiggles its hips around Highbury Corner,
is suddenly a poem
along with the brilliant green of the year’s first grass.
Boris Johnson in the newspaper on the kitchen table
thinks he’s a poem;
the grey squirrel leaping over snowdrops like a skimmed stone
knows she is one.
The yellow marble oscillating in front of the cat’s contracted irises
is probably an elegy;
but the nervous toss of the black plumes
of Albert France Undertakers’ great dark carthorse
is more like blank verse.
Over at the Whittington Hospital, Claudia’s Albanian schizophrenic
who will only talk to her via a dead bee
has started hearing voices of poets.
And Carlos/Carolina, the Portuguese orderly
whose name tag lengthens as her penis shrinks
is a dramatic monologue by an unreliable narrator.
The bitter taste of pollen
the lurid russet stain from fallen pollen
Jo’s allergy to pollen
the pale blue tablets that cure his allergy to pollen
are pretty much half way to an anthology
and look at all the Easter eggs in Morrison’s –
they’ve opened their mouths and started to sing.
