Nightwatchmen
That lawn lined like A4 paper, that faint
blue margin of a sultry summer’s day,
that cricket bat cherried with bright sunsets
blockholing undeclared into the dark.
Three middle-aged men, Johnny-bums-in-air,
poke with a bat and stumps, short-sightedly
search the undergrowth and see their missing
ball in the fool’s red of rose or poppy.
Their shadows lengthening into slapstick
they loll their heads in utter disbelief
doing ‘toys coming out of the pram’ routines
when their appeal’s turned down against the light.
Those petals falling off the Spanish broom,
that metronome efficiency of time.
