Moving In
(1)
there are no shoulds in the universe
god knows that
the syntax couldn’t be simpler
you and me
blood and bones off the page
sipping coffee
punctuates our speech, two voices
everybody knows
this at least we do together
instant and complete
we spill the beans
(2)
that’s the way it is
when the two of us meet
even when one is absent
only you know
how many we are:
the knowing nosy voices,
the “I”
who want to know the “You”
that’s what we do together,
heads off under the table
never
you know what we mean
always
(3)
let’s jump up and down for luck
while we walk/talk several tunes
it’s always different
listening to you
hearing
me
inside the story -
re-defining ourselves
stealing crumbs
from our beards
chittering sparrows
fly off separately
making a song
from our words
about who we are
and who we might become
tomorrow
