The Rise Again of Llywelyn
Through hills and vales we truly followed
down wooded valleys to the seas
stringing bow, shouldering spear
long the years to be free
many the days we lost our way
many the battles lost some won
many the years we hoped and waited
many lost dawns we saw the sun
dwellings downed by white invader
left few the cairns to call our own
still we followed bold Llywelyn
chasing ever, the hwyl he’d shown
oe’r the foe, o’er the mountains
through morning mists and rivers free
hounded, waited, disguise wooded
caught unawares, they could not see
defended lakes, cwms and corries
winged our arrows through hearts of oak
lunged the spear, plunged the dagger
watched them fall, heard them croak
faced them square, stared down their eyes
unrelenting, no quarter given
or asked for, in the endless battle
just our war, for we were driven
to fight just freedoms, call Wales our own-
long long the awaited Caerdydd day
late afternoon and shoulders braced
sent the surly Saxon on his way,
turned him, threw him, back o’er border
defeat he found hard to like
his army broken, confuséd, fled
and we stood and stared on Offa’s Dyke
then burned our torches into night
sat round our camp fires in vales and hills
but still our Prince stared into coals
and we unknowing ignored the ills
of what he knew would come again
