Shiny conker brown, their name and leather smell
spoke Famous Five adventures. On those ridged soles
I wouldn’t slip or be blown over. They never really fitted,
but I was grief-struck when the buckle broke,
rolled down the bank and lost its glint
sinking slowly in the clogged canal.
All day at school, as if a lifetime were
fast-forwarded, I had to limp and hobble.
For years, those sandals gathered dust:
too good to throw away, too dear to mend.
