The Idols
The beggars held
the city in their power
they sat
on the cathedral steps
No one could pray
without losing all his money
they forced the sculptors
to use their bodies
as models
for new bodies of the Christ
and to fasten them to the crosses
the beggars sat
straddle-legged on the cathedral steps
while they let themselves be sketched
they slept there at night
between burning candles
rolled in carpets
so that no one could pray in secret
