There was an army of red-coated soldiers.
Behind, between and through them
rallied the blue ghosts.
There was an army of blue-coated soldiers.
Behind, between and through them
rallied the red ghosts.
And the two pairs fought:
red against blue - real armies,
blue against red - imaginary ghosts.
And the red-blue soldiers
screaming reality at each others’ guts
grappled with what they couldn’t bear to imagine.
So many died.
And the imaginary ghosts
made also as to grapple
but sifted through each other
since already they were dead
and thus untouchable.
At the end
a few of the blue-coated soldiers
cheered because it seemed that they had won.
And all of the red ghosts
pursed up to imaginary bugles
for in reality they had won.
