Identifying the Bodies
Dead flowers by the roadside
and the taste of hospital toast
in the mouth, the charred remains.
Even the dog can feel the pain.
What will we do with all that rain?
In the garden the leaves bleed
onto the cracked pavement.
You can feel her grief, trickling
through God’s stone hands.
She presses her face to the window
squinting through the rain.
She can hear the thud, thud
of a ball against the garage wall
no, not her boys, she can see them
through the rain, her boys
their little dead faces, appearing
again and again and again.
