Every day the sea unravels another thread
of soft grey pebbles. Soon it will river
the high street, chivvy pubs and chip shops
until they shuffle their bricks up the hill.
Even the Cragg Sisters will have to up sticks.
Doilies and scones will float out the door
and blossom like anemones in the crannies
of the submerged lifeboat-station.
In Alde Lane, they’re taking no chances:
every room is being shelved with tins,
every boy is christened Noah.
Each family wants to be sure of its ark.
