That horsehead of Selene is nibbling my ear so
I turn toward the Parthenon Marbles. Stop abruptly
as I catch a glimpse of a postcard
of the Rosetta Stone: that key-stone I saw
imbued with my Mother’s wonder on our way home
from Egypt fifty years ago. There’s an Eye of Horus too,
a hunting scene filled with wings, a detail
from The Book of the Dead. I buy them all,
for Mother, then ring
the carer – (of course) everything is fine.
Spurring on, I run into the real Rosetta Stone.
It’s like my bones are programmed.
Mother was always Egypt. I was Greece.
My horse nuzzles again. I’m coming, I whisper.
On that first distant trip, there was only
an iron railing around the Acropolis.
A guard came out, unlocked the gate for us.
