River Thames
This is our island. Eyes off,
you, who haul and groan upstream,
sliding on the rising tide.
These are exclusive high rise
nests. Our willows grow aslant
the Thames, as slow as spring.
We await the full curtaining
of leaves around our mist grey chicks.
Their feathers flirt with the wind,
like a froth of gossamer.
Soon the shafts will stiffen,
their wings unfold and flex, and I,
elder hunchback of our heronry,
can fly free from this nursery.
Look away. Motor past
quickly. Leave us peace, privacy.
