Deluge
Wandering Burren-like wilderness,
a man senses the earth’s trepidation,
the sky’s sullenness, the wind’s moodiness.
He builds himself a freestanding crannόg,
a vessel in which to ride out the fluctuating tide
with kith, kin, useful creatures.
Waters drown the land.
These survivors of catastrophe
are forced to devour the flesh
of cloven-hoofed beasts
until the plains are productive again.
By which time they have the taste of blood,
like dogs driven wild by the scent of blood
they keep returning to tear the throats
of innocent creatures.
Each night the spits turn
above flames leaping like
serpent’s tongues to lick
fat dripping from roasting flesh.
There is no end to the holocaust.
