The End
The Look of Love slid off her face
and into his lap
Silence.
He picked it up. Holding it carefully by one corner,
he placed it on the table between them. Outside,
the rain tapped on the window –
an incessant, uneven tapping - like Morse code.
‘You slipped me just a piece of it,
but I want it all or nuthin' at all...’
the radio faded in and out.
The girl - she did not think of herself as a woman
- looked straight ahead.
She saw the window streaked with rain and dirt.
The tip of his nose intruded into her line of vision.
Her knee was touching his.
At night I shut the window against you,
but you seep in
through cracks, you penetrate
me in dreams.
She said, "Last night I saw an old woman
with a black scarf on her head and
bright, quick eyes like a bird,
eating out of a garbage can."
He looked down at her hand on the table.
The fingers were long and slim,
the nails white slivers,
except for on the second finger where it had been bitten
to the flesh. There was a silver ring
on each finger of her right hand:
a braid, a blue stone, a butterfly, a thin band.
He did not look at her face.
