The Deaf Wife by Christine Ellison (artwork) and Andrew Kelly (text)
Beauty, deafness, touch, sex, music, silence - just some of the themes tackled in this unusual publication. This large format rectangular book is a combination of creative writing, visual art and book design. The writing itself is hard to define, forever changing from prose to poetry, with switching viewpoints and narrators, some passages reflective and carefully composed, others appearing like textbook stream-of-consciousness, alongside interludes of pure dialogue. Despite its fragmentary character it actually tells the story of a relationship, but it is hard not to just look at the book rather than read it. There are fold out pages, delicate drawings, facsimile-like scribbles, varying paper colours and blocks of text apparently tumbling down and falling over. The symbolism of the artwork is clever and touching – forks morphing into tuning forks, shells, moths, petals - illustrating aspects of the story. Sometimes blocks of colour overlap the text which actually makes it difficult to read. With so much complex form there is a danger of losing sight of the content. This book should probably be considered an art book, or indeed a work of art - one attempt of many to create the perfect combination of words and images.
