The Soul
Second Light Poetry Competition 2008 SHORTLISTED
His ears lift up
tugged by wires from above;
he waits, nose wet and shining,
sinews in his legs and back
straining towards the darkness
beyond the station lights,
each hair of his thick coat ready,
in full course, courant, tail stiff,
his eyes – oh, his eyes,
his ears tugged,
tugged
by those wires, four paws
holding the platform down
until at last the train arrives
and hope flickers this way and that
alive with tiny nervous pulses
scans each face, each face passes.
Pass friend. He waits. He waits
on guard, a soul unguarded;
at this cold juncture
late at night
beyond all rational hope
he waits.
