Feeding Humming Birds on the Radio
He tells us scarlet has magnetic power.
He smears a glossy ring around his lips,
his vowels warping as he rounds his mouth.
This must make him something like a flower.
Except for nectar. Audibly he sips
the sugar water, puckers up a pout
holding the sweetness closer to his lips.
Then quietness. The listener waits
for the hum of tiny wings fanning his cheek
for the man’s soft moaning as the nectar slips
for the hiss of sweetness pierced by a needle beak
Pregnant seconds pass. And then he spits.
