B.A. to Heathrow
Waking, I watch a vapour trail
chalk the early sky.
It's fifteen miles from Strumble Head,
so thirty thousand feet
above my head.
This I can understand.
Also that the unseen plane is in today,
while ash trees here wait for this morning's sun
to gleam behind their dark.
The streak spreads easily
exactly as it should
by rule of something
never understood.
But hard to realise the thing that marks
this cloudless span, this line I see,
holds someone saying
'Coffee, Sir? or Tea?'
