Shift
We woke on winter mornings
to a battery of lights revolving
our bedroom walls, the sound
of cinders crushed.
The six o’clock shift on their way
to Hoffmans or Marconis.
On warm evenings they’d walk home
talking, pushing their bikes.
I liked the Poles best,
the volley of words
I couldn’t even guess.
Sometimes they’d stop for a smoke
stubbing their fag ends out
on the concrete posts the Council planted
to slow them down.
