Common ground
We peck for something suitable, weighing
the sayable while the black cars glide
untroubled into place. Small stuff,
drawing a line under
another of our parents’ generation.
Too old for change, we let
children define us: travels, success,
their proud fertility. Outlines. Then
the scant few seconds scattering damp earth before
we shuffle, cough, offer the last excuse,
facing the long drive home.
We must meet up at other times, we say,
weaving good-byes, fingers crossed against
the M6, rush-hour tailbacks, evening rain.
