Creatures
Night-time. In the distance across the plain
A single light. I imagine
People flicking it on /
A large and fun-loving family /
And assorted motives / including love /
Jealousy / madness / death. It could also
Be the birth of an animal / very
Likely in such an area / at
This time of year. All-considering, sifting
The possibilities / is it a calf / is it a
Pig / male or female / or a
Hybrid – the superbly equipped
Inhabitants of the house / the cow-sheds / the
Owners of the light / remain the object
Of my concern / until their lamp
Goes out. Then they are all
Dead to me.
