Greek Images
It seemed I had no skill
with which to stitch
my tapestries, spirit
crushed, long nights
strangely suspended in time,
grey weight of fear.
Now, night is shot with
needlepoints of light,
a mesh of gold scratched
on the bottle–green
that is the surface of
the sea on which I sail.
Pomegranates, such as I
have only ever eaten
with a pin, are ready now
for Hallowe'en in miniature,
their yellow lanterns
ghostly, wicked, in the trees.
A hedge of morning glory,
purple in the afternoon,
keeps from the sun's rays
lemons still small and green,
leaves from a banana tree
fan me to sleep at night.
Something I had thought
quite wizened stirs to life,
new growth is painful
but genesis of pleasure
as my spirit turns,
lifts to the sun again.
