for the pagan tide to steal its cornerstone
where they lay
in each other’s warmth, behind the blackout curtains,
where from sixty years on I intervene,
have her say it: Listen.
A seagull’s warning swerve along the coast.
He lays his hand on her belly: After the war...
The tide stops in that moment, the long breakers
curved over the seawall, sheltering, not falling.
