from Nineteen Elastic Poems

Christ
It’s more than a year now that I’ve not thought of You
Since I wrote Easter my last poem but one
My life has changed since then
Yet I remain much the same
There on the wall are the paintings I’ve done
They open up strange views into myself and bring my mind back to You
Christ
Life
That’s what I’ve dug up
My paintings make me ill
I’m over-passionate
The whole world’s turned orange
I’ve spent a sad day thinking of friends
And reading the paper
Christ
Life crucified in the daily broadsheet I hold open with outstretched
arms
Wingspans
Flares
Ferment
Cries
One would think an aeroplane’s crashing
It’s me
Passion
Fire
Cheap paperback
Newspaper
It’s no use trying not to talk about oneself
Every so often a scream is the only option
I am the other
Too touchy by half
