Out Loud
I couldn't have heard his skirl
whirlwinding - a cry let loose and
losing its head with the freedom -
but it rattled our car windows.
And then I saw him: playing his
bagpipes in a disused car park,
no-one around who could complain
that he disturbed the peace.
Regardless of potholes and traffic
he strode like a Black Watch piper.
Dressed in blue jeans and anorak he clearskied
the tarmac battlefield.
To me, seat-belted, driving north, he had
the chance to hear himself.
I envied how his lungs expanded.
He took the open air as practice room.
