S-Joe
Walked the way of the road
Leading into Airy Hall
With a twist and a turn
Hither and thither in line
With plates spun by a hand
None can see but many think
Must operate rods on which
Those plates balance and shimmer
As S-Joe shimmies a few feet
Stops on a sweet spot
Reverses for almost as many
Steps and then rolls forward
Getting nowhere fast
Folk said or with all the time
Afforded those spinning
Plates tilted twice
For S-Joe in keeping
With two bends in his name
And in the road whose
Open ends admit him
Whether he shuffles backwards
Or forwards eyes locked
On the melting always-ahead
Arms parked by his side
His knees lift and drop
With a hip and a hop
‘S-Joe’ we kids call ‘S-Joe’
Following him from one
End of town to the next
Keeping just out of reach
In case he springs
From his trance
Again I call ‘S-Joe’
For his response
As I would have it
On his behalf ‘S-Joe’
Shadowing him
My road tied to his name
