North Tawton
(In memory of Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath)
We travelled through a bleak North Devon town,
Its streets subdued in chill October rain.
In shroud of dusk the blood-red leaves twirled down
Around the house where cancer levelled pain.
Next door the church, where tombstones formed a hedge,
Awaited death. The second of a pair
Had come to tremble on that slippery edge
Where once his poet wife had met despair.
Near equal now, their union gave us words
To conjure life. Her incantations, moons,
Tirades of ash and bone, his fabled birds
And savage beasts played out their powerful tunes.
That week full rivers flowed in joyous race,
Tumultuous showers poured down in dark embrace.
