Polynesian Navigation
The way to think is that you never move --
the moon and stars and islands that the
stars denote move past you in the night
their speed and intention set by the move-
ment of the boat inside your empty bowels
the rhythm of the swell you picked
to steer by when the sun went down.
At dawn you will correct for drift.
The sail sighs, an exhaling engine, and
the mast creaks your limbs' exhaustion.
The next course star rises three knuckles
inclination above the sea's mean horizon
a navigator's star with a navigator's name.
A nameless steersman, you pull the oar to you.
