High Culture
The ability to talk to Alpine flowers
falls flat at apres-ski.
So I save my chat, and climb for hours
on the goat path, free
to walk, to talk to the Annuals
in the sunlit Pass at dawn,
by noon be conversational
with Gentians on The Matterhorn.
Much depends on genus and altitude.
Heliacrysum stays schtum.
Saxifraga's always rather mute -
like talking to a kitchen broom.
But when I reach the summit ice
there's a voice both white and breezy.
Edelweiss, Edelweiss,
every morning she greets me.
