Burma
The sharp lessons of his father,
or missing his Mam all these years.
Who knows?
It was looking like an Irish giant,
never being married,
keeping funny hours
or hens.
Or the tablets.
Or never having the schooling
to keep up with his mind.
Or Burma.
Having seen it all before,
the holy women shake
their heads and cluck.
They never pray for
those in drink.
When he goes to Mass
he stands at the back,
to attention.
He sometimes prays
in Latin
with his fists clenched
hard in his
pockets.
