Kosovo from Cumbria
The first day of a war three wars ago
we were here last; the weather kept its season
March-cold, baring its teeth in the wind
and we moved across its face hunched to the hillside
the map blowing like rags from my hand
and the path lost and no sign of Windermere
The hanging rust of the cross lurched
from a heap of stones and struts
The bomber broke among the fissures on such a day as this,
war in Europe, the valley thick with fog
and the machine ploughing the soil absurdly
seeding only blood in the cockpit
a steel-framed cairn and a plaque
in the quiet hills so far from the enemy
We found the path running alongside
and reached shelter before the worst of the rain
reshot the hills as grainy news footage
