The Two Faces of Home
There is a quiet battle
Stirring in the landscape of home -
A battle between countryside and town.
Farms are found a short walk from council estates
And the occasional horse and cart
Can be seen making their way through heavy traffic.
An avenue where monks once strolled
Of ancient oaks and wild flowers
Now growing in the shadow of factories,
Streets of pit houses
Are overlooked by supermarkets,
As woods and allotments make room
For yet more modern developments.
Home is called a ‘town’
But mention its name in the nearest city
They either say “where?”
Or consider it to be a place
You only drive through but never stop.
A place where the snow hits first
And the buses rarely visit.
These are two faces of modern living
A battle of what is traditional and what is new,
But only time will tell
If they are images of progress
Or destruction.
