Boy at Château de Queille
With roses the whole place is shadowed
Sappho Fragment 2
And the boy, pale-faced like the rose climbing the wall,
calls to the dogs who scamper up the steps where the boy sits
and the three of them, dogs, boy, run down to the stream
where the boy skims stones and Rufus swims – doggy-paddle –
to find a stick to take back to his friend, who, sad, silent, stands
by the side of the quickening water.
Stands just to the right of his young life.
