The Night Before
Tomorrow, when birds with turquoise eyes
gather in trees whose flowers are drops of blood,
after a day of lizards, and the yammer
of a creature in ecstasy or pain,
you'll discover the source of this river
and bathe in the pool beneath the waterfall
overhung with flowers you have yet to name.
Tonight, with my breeze against your lips
you'll dream of being kissed, oblivious
to those grunts and rustlings, which may
or may not be friendly. Tomorrow will be
citrus and musk, mango and persimmon;
tonight I send you moths from the darkness,
words in a language you do not know.
