At the Edge of Flight
For a Son
Held by your scarred beginnings yet drawn
to a northern light,
you rise and fall with the eagle and the cry
of the blood we shared.
You see the stars unfold, the waters
find their own way
but how much of me will you echo
in the sloughing of the years?
Held by your scarred beginnings yet drawn
to a far-away land;
your tongue will taste the last wilderness
of its own scattered words.
You feel the shuffle of wind, the night
filling with tears;
and listen, will my shadow move within you
beyond the red covers of sky?
You run with the wolf, know the crevices of dark,
the stitching of earth to the auroras;
yet I felt you tremble at the edge of flight, contracting,
holding back, unprepared.
Held by your scarred beginnings yet drawn
to the womb of my vision;
are you the child who has found a voice
and does not fear the silences?
