Teddy Bear 1940
Alone of my neglected teddy-bears,
this little blue and white old favourite shares
this fifth auspicious year in my affairs.
I comfort him in cupboard under stairs
or in the dark, cold Anderson if there’s
enough of warning to come down. He stares
at me with fear in his glass eyes but wears
the scarlet scarf I knitted him and glares
up at the drone of Nazi bombers, squares
up, red, white and blue, in his contempt, dares
them to do their German worst, see if he cares,
sometimes, like Dad and Gran’pa even swears.
He’ll be all right. But still he whispers prayers.
