Ladybird, Ladybird
It's midnight, your room empty,
Che Guevara on the wall
next to a quote from Brecht and a Maggie mask,
'Give Peace a Chance' stencilled on your headboard,
the dragon's tongue at one with your teddy.
Rubbish bags spill with magic.
I want to rescue the clockwork ladybird
and your Cub Scout badges,
wrap them in tissue, place them in my trunk
with your Christening shawl, beaker and spoon.
Quartz from Horton winks on the window sill,
razor shells from your trip to Rhossili,
'Birds of the Seashore'open on the floor.
A snorkel and flippers under your bed
where I find the scent of you
in a bundle of T-shirts.
Alone in the everlasting dawn
I caress
every long-limbed August day.
Eisteddfod posters curling in the corner,
your butterfly net a home for spiders......
