Bang the drum and never fear!
Kiss the maids in the market stall!
That’s my philosophy, that’s all
the books of wisdom sell so dear.Drum the people out of sleep!
Drum reveille with all your might,
and then march drumming toward the light –
that’s my wisdom. It will keep.That’s all wise Hegel said in sum,
the gist of books, the very heart!
I caught on quick because I’m smart,
and because I like to drum.
Douglas Airmet has published translations from Heine in The Formalist and in Light Quarterly. His own poems are included in Idaho’s Poetry: a Centennial Anthology (University of Idaho Press), The Temple and RE:AL, The Journal of Liberal Arts. He has a doctorate in English literature, and is the editor, publisher and book-maker of The Acid Press, based at his home in Idaho, which brings out small chap-books of poetry.
