Ice, which sealed
the familiar pond
under a grey glass lid,
has melted and broken
into ragged islands.
The frosted oak leaves
on the bank soften
at the edges, though
rime is still white
and the man and dog
stand out starkly.
He wears a black sheepskin coat,
tweed cap, and woollen gloves,
and leans down saying “Dido.
There. Look!” but she
is pointing towards the camera already.
Under glass their image is crisp
though it melts in my memory,
and she has followed him
out of sight, in among
the leafless trees.
