Here and There
SWANSEA
for Margaret Gwyneth Morgan, 1907-2005
Sylvie, shooing ravens,
Provokes a little fluttering
And her shoes are full of sand.
OK, let’s pour it back –
The falling grains will glitter
Like that lighthouse in the sun,
Those prinkly waves, the bonnet
Of that ice-cream van.
TWICKENHAM
for Sylvie
We have to go home, in the end,
Leave the swings to hang their heads,
Strap you in then steer you back
Through the shadows, through
The high tide’s twigs and plastic,
See the river cross that road
We took not long ago.
Stephen Knight's book for children, Sardines and Other Poems, was published in 2004. His other publications include Dream City Cinema (Bloodaxe), The Sandfields Baudelaire (Smith / Doorstop) and a novel, Mr Schnitzel (Viking / Penguin), which won the Welsh Book of the Year Award in 2001.
