Last Judgement, Groeninge Museum
You make a beeline for the Bosch,
which my guidebook describes
as a surrealist nightmare,
and begin your exaggerated scrutiny.
I leave you to stroll through other rooms,
stopping when something draws me:
a pasty-faced Madonna; time-darkened
saints resisting their temptations.
My route’s haphazard - I’ve ignored
the fold-out plan and have to backtrack.
Still fixed on hell, you’re careful
not to notice. I imagine
you’ve set yourself a target: one hundred
aimless tourists must pass by before
you raise your more informed eyes.
Better still - I’ll prove impatient.
Bruges is beautiful; the sun’s a bonus.
This modern gallery’s purpose-built and light.
Things have been going well and so
you had to find your little patch of darkness.
