Between Two Beats of Thought
It was springtime and I was travelling
and through the train's windows I saw some sheep
with lively lambs and then a tree blossoming
white on a sunlit hill. I wanted to keep
the carefree joy of the lambs, the beauty
of that blossom, but, between these images -
and not through any glass but in my crafty
mind's eye corner - a babe appeared, all smiles
in his daddy's arms from which he reached out
to touch a pretty flame. He howled in pain
and I wanted oh so much to be without
awareness of this unknown child again
who came to be so sudden and so unsought
in the sly space between two beats of thought.
