Spring Lament
evergreens bow
under snow
frosted
like a tiered wedding cake
I have lost two men
my lover in
autumn
my friend this spring
in between the evergreens
sienna leaves of pin oaks
flutter
from slender branches
after the first loss
I cried I wrote
how
could I enter this new year
prairie grass bends
under snow and
ice
cracks the stalks
what did I do or not do
if I asked each man
why
would their answers tell me
ice sky dulls the pond
where two swans
float
always in sight of each other
the swans ruffle gray water
each one necessary to the
other
as each man was to me
swags of snow-laced
vines float like
ghosts
from tree to tree
how can I balance my losses
new snow falls
blanketing
my way
