Father of the man
Caught in black and white
they snapped me aged two,
knee bandaged, hands strangling
an umbrella, taller than myself,
handle, an angry head,
open top like flapping wings -
comically typical
my family all agreed.
What was evident then
can reappear at any time;
as on the day my wife found me
trying to cut logs with a rusty saw,
a dustbin as “horse”,
one foot cocked high,
struggling to subdue again
that dammed recalcitrance of things.
