Second Light Poetry Competition 2008 SHORTLISTED
The inventory is almost complete,
exact and alphabetical,
a catalogue of objects you touch –
your favourite porcelain cup,
magazines you forget to read,
a dozen shirts waiting to enfold you.
In your study I check the plants
you grow from seed,
struggling on the windowsill.
Tonight I will spend hours
calculating how much air
you need each day to breathe.
If I take a break
I will lose my command.
Details will begin to disappear,
even the colour of your eyes –
an exact match for the sea
on the first day of winter.
