Praise-song
Launched like a kite in a cave
a fish-shoal on your own
bonehead float & kick
be fine
below balloon-tight dome of skin
be round & good
& thickening of green all round
flycatchers back from Sahara
whizz & spin from telephone wire
pass flies from beak to beak to nest
wrapped in racket of blood-bloom
dip in the pit where there are no gods
deep before the I
first kick
of sybillant clay
be what you want
become becoming
let come your goats when you whistle
& may your car-tyres warm on rolling road unswivelling
your lover’s thumb be a spot of sunshine on your neck
your pledges fit and flexible as your grandad’s furniture joints
please
be embraced by friendly intoxicants only
& good warm lands your
bow or book or chisel
own
a very first handful of chalk for Babel

as I sit in the sun & chat this
drought-cloud, draft of evening,
chant this
line-prop, plastic clothes-line, flycatcher pinching white-wood
finial
crow-crooks fussing, bruising sky at the back of the wood
as daisies be your name
as tough as tractors
cluster of friends & cheer be your name
be free of bone-sore, memory loss
dragged from the suture
& hauled in pool of scarlet of nipple and ragged nail
soaking of rich red blood in the pool of which
such finish & detail
you’ve passed through the lion’s throat into the world of day
scream and kick in the dragon’s den of light
the world will scurry to your naming of it,
between the I & I
first kick of sybillant clay

& every Summer astound
