Bitter Apples
Early in the apple season
Once I found upon a tree
A golden penny for my lover
And he found the same for me.
I had thought that he would keep it
But he gambled at the fair,
Lost and won and lost twice over,
Changed it for a silver pair.
Even these he did not treasure,
Silver two from golden one,
But bought and sold and in the selling
All the smallest change was gone.
So I buried my gold penny,
It will not take a year to grow ;
But its tree will always carry
Bitter apples, that I know.
